Variation in leaf mesophyll anatomy of fern species imposes significant effects on leaf gas exchange, light capture, and leaf hydraulic conductance

چکیده
The mesophyll anatomical traits are essential factors for efficient light capture, CO2 diffusion, and hydraulics in leaves. At the same time, leaf governed by xylem traits. Thus, simultaneous analyses of anatomy will clarify links among water use. However, such have been scarcely performed, particularly on non-seed plants. Using seven fern species, we first showed that species with a large thickness had high photosynthetic rate related to drought tolerance, low hydraulic conductance. chloroplast surface area (Sc) per significantly decreased an increase thickness, which may diffusion absorption efficiency each chloroplast. Sc was almost constant suggests ferns enhance their capture ability via regulation density.

Leaf mesophyll conductance and leaf hydraulic conductance: an introduction to their measurement and coordination.
Two highly contrasting variables summarizing the efficiency of transport of materials within the leaf are recognized as playing central roles in determining gas exchange and plant performance. This paper summarizes current approaches for the measurement of mesophyll conductance to CO2 (g m) and leaf hydraulic conductance (K leaf) and addresses the physiological integration of these parameters. ...
متن کاملThe impact of blue light on leaf mesophyll conductance.
Blue light has many direct and indirect effects on photosynthesis. The impact of blue light on mesophyll conductance (g(m)), one of the main diffusive limitation to photosynthesis, was investigated in leaves of Nicotiana tabacum and Platanus orientalis, characterized by high and low g(m), respectively. Leaves were exposed to blue light fractions between 0% and 80% of incident light intensity (3...
متن کاملLeaf hydraulic conductance varies with vein anatomy across Arabidopsis thaliana wild-type and leaf vein mutants.
Leaf venation is diverse across plant species and has practical applications from paleobotany to modern agriculture. However, the impact of vein traits on plant performance has not yet been tested in a model system such as Arabidopsis thaliana. Previous studies analysed cotyledons of A. thaliana vein mutants and identified visible differences in their vein systems from the wild type (WT). We me...
متن کاملAsymmetrical effects of mesophyll conductance on fundamental photosynthetic parameters and their relationships estimated from leaf gas exchange measurements.
Worldwide measurements of nearly 130 C3 species covering all major plant functional types are analysed in conjunction with model simulations to determine the effects of mesophyll conductance (g(m)) on photosynthetic parameters and their relationships estimated from A/Ci curves. We find that an assumption of infinite g(m) results in up to 75% underestimation for maximum carboxylation rate V(cmax...
متن کاملEffects of branch height on leaf gas exchange, branch hydraulic conductance and branch sap flux in open-grown ponderosa pine.
Recent studies have shown that stomata respond to changes in hydraulic conductance of the flow path from soil to leaf. In open-grown tall trees, branches of different heights may have different hydraulic conductances because of differences in path length and growth. We determined if leaf gas exchange, branch sap flux, leaf specific hydraulic conductance, foliar carbon isotope composition (delta...
